Full Description
Fragmentary moat. <1> <2> Manorial. <3> According to OS field report, 1976, the house is on a slightly raised island surrounded by the remains of a homestead moat. This is cut into a gentle south slope, filled by a spring and drains from the SW angle. It measures overall 53m NE-SW x about 48m transversely, with arms up to 12m wide. The N arm can be traced as a depression through the garden joining the S angle which has been recut, below the site of the original entrance. <5> in <4> OS plan is in SMR. <2> Incomplete, rectangular moat. <7> Sketch plan on back MSRG card. <8> Probably to be associated with the family of Robert de `Trumpington' (1255) which probably came from Trumpington (Cambridgeshire). Also mentioned in 1412 and 1544 as `Trumpyngton(s)'. <9> House is C15 with later additions. Now forms T-plan. Hall range is C15, was open to ridge. It was 2 bays long and was raised a first storey during the early years of Henry VIII and a first floor was then inserted. The cross-wing is jettied to the NW and has a side purlin roof; it was extended in C18. <6>
Site Assessment: In fair condition in 1949. <3>
