Full Description

Mound, perhaps a tumulus, in Conyfield Wood. A bowl-shaped mound 21m in diameter and 1.7m high with an outer ditch 3m wide and 0.3m deep. Incorporated in the ditch, to the west of the mound, is a circular bowl- shaped depression 14m in diameter (see sketch and plan on OS card, OS 1949. <4> Colchester Museum records two mounds here - recorded on 10-4-59, though OS record only one and only one is scheduled. <1> <3> <8> - <11> Sketch plan on back SMR sheet shows robber trench in centre of mound and mound truncated by forest path and modern ditch. <2> VCH suggests mound may be Roman. <9> "Traces of ditch. Height 5' diameter 80'. The subsoil is gravel and the position is a usual one for a barrow. Ponds and various disturbances in the area. <10>

Site Assessment = Mound partially tree-covered. Dug into within the past ten years. <1> In 1959 wood was being cleared by the owner and was to come under Forestry Commission control. A small trench was dug into the mound in 1959, but may have missed a central burial (if present) and may not have reached the original ground surface. In 1979 the barrow was almost obscured by tall bracken and only the height of trees showed its position. In 1980 the barrow prfile was easily visible after death of undergrowth and bracken. There was evidence of a path up the west side, a possible small hole on the summit and traces of a ditch on the east side. <10>
