Full Description

Roman occupation in the grounds of East Hill House. Roman pavement found in 1907. <1> The pavement was found in 1907, in levelling a bowling green S of East Hill House. <2> <3> <4> Large piece of tessellated pavement and, 10ft from it, a smaller piece, a geometrical pattern found February 1907, S of East Hill House in levelling a bowling green. <5> <6> <7> The mosaics were to have been incororated in the pavement of a pavilion but it appears that one piece only was built into the wall dividing East Hill House from the Minories. As this has no resemblance to a star pattern it can hardly be from PRN 12283 . The large piece was red and the geometric mosaic was coloured. <8> The site lies within the area of the Roman walled town. Two tessellated pavements and one mosaic pavement (see ) have been removed from the site to date. <9>

Site Assessment = This seems to be one of the few areas within the walled town containing relatively undisturbed archaeological levels. Scheduled area also contains part of the town wall, two Medieval bastions (see ) and a well preserved ice house (see ). <9>

A magnetomer and topographic survey was carried out in the grounds of East Hill House. A negative linear anomoly running N-S is possibly a street, revetment, or terrace.<10>

Nine small exploratory trenches were dug in the grounds of East Hill House. Roman levels were found at depths of between 15cm and 60cm, beneath soils which suggest that the trenched area was for the most part open ground from the end of the Roman period. The exposed Roman material consisted mainly of deposits containing destruction debris and included two probable robber trenches and a gravelled area. As an adjunct to the excavations, engineers boreholes in the trenched area and in the adjacent bus station to the east were observed and the strat noted as a result. <11>
