Monument record MCC5624 - Mersea Channel

Summary

Large earthwork, three sides of a rectangle survivng [north side eroded]. A linear earthwork runs from this to the sea wall. There is a roughly centrally positioned red hill within this enclosure. These monuments are located on the edge of the channel . Briquetage and red earth are clearly visible in the eroding section, roughly 0.30m thick. These two monuments are on the EHCR [16802, 12573]. The enclosure is marked on the OS 1st Ed. It is not known if the two are contemporary or if the enclosure represents a later re-use of the raised ground of the red hill. Presumable this would have provided a safer haven for livestock.
