Full Description

Colchester - St Botolph's Priory Founded at the close of the C11, this was the first house of Augustinian Canons in the country.

Watching brief on post-pits for a new gate and 190m railing revealed residual human remains and light scatter of re-used early building material. The majority of pits were no deeper than 70cm deep and did not penetrate beyond post-medieval levels.<1>

A further watching brief in 2010 revelaed additional post-medieval features of gravestones and a well of probable 18th to 19th century date. <2>
