Full Description
Mid/late C18 granary, later animal feed mill.
A structural survey was undertaken by Richard Shackle in 2006. This is the last 18th century granary in Colchester. The building is a small timber-framed building with weather-boarding and an asbestos roof - a watercolour painting by Edward Ayres c.1775 shows it with a thatched roof and doorway in the west gable. It is a four bay building of Baltic pine and oak on a brick plinth. In 1923 the Doe family converted the granary into a feed mill. Two ginding mills were installed in the ground floor, and on the upper floor large metal hoppers for storing grain. A large lorry shed was added to the south side of the building in the 1930s and a brick building against the east gable during WWII. The machinery was used to grind grain for pet food up until 2002.<1>
A historic building appraisal wasundertaken by the Heritage Collective in April 2019 to inform a planning application for redevelopment.<2>
