Full Description
Nineteenth century urban brewery and malting originally owned by Daniel’s Brewery. The former has been part demolished and converted to offices; the two-storey malthouse is in residential use (Roger Browning House). Malt kiln is no longer extant.<1>
This is the site of the Daniell Brothers brewery which has dated and initialled bricks of 1876. Destroyed by fire it was re-built in 1878 by G.J. Worssam and Son, a brewers’ engineers firm of London. Following a merger with the West Bergholt Brewery the business became known as Daniell Brothers and Co. Brewing ceased here in 1892 although the firm continued to trade at West Bergholt until taken over by Truman, Hanbury and Buxton and Co. Ltd. in 1958 and these premises were used as offices until selling off began in 1957. Much of the buildings remain intact, including the former malthouse now in residential use (Roger Browning House) and surveyed as part of the Essex County Council Malthouse Survey. Externally, the brewery retains much of its integrity - mixture of window shapes and sizes although all are small paned, a louvred ventilator on the ridge of the brewhouse, taking-in doors and a chimney. It is all of red brick under a slate roof and is four storeys with a cellar.<2>
