Full Description

Originally developed by Robert Andrews, Brewer and Maltster who died in 1815 aged 75, with a brewhouse, two malthouses, offices and the owner’s house. Charles Cobbold was brewing here around 1823 and it stayed in the family until the business was sold to C. Stopes and Sons of the Eagle Brewery, Colchester in 1883. Brewing would have ceased on the sale as Stopes would have bought the business for the tied houses and to take over a competitor brewer. The last of the malthouses was demolished in November 2001 and the site to the rear of the complex has been developed as new residential units. The front building remains (Nos 35 and 35a), brick built with a red brick chimney stack under a clay tile roof, while the rear portion is timber-framed. <1>.
