Full Description
H. Laver held that the Roman town wall was built over the remains of houses "in one place on Priory Street (45) I observed that the wall was built over and stood on the ruins of a house". Stated that these houses showed evidence of fire and was of the opinion that these houses were pre-Boudican. Laver writing in 1907. The one spot he quotes which is closely marked is spot 45 of Hull, quite close to a point " where we have since found that the town wall is a medieval rebuild under which the foundations of the Roman wall remain in fragmentary condition". Sections I - VII (Hull) have produced no evidence of houses foundations passing under the wall. Remains of Roman occupation where found under the rampart. The burnt layer or lowest occupation layers under the rampart may have continued outside the wall " but so far, except in the section now to be described we have had no opportunity to observe them if they did." <1>
