Full Description

Large scale excavations undertaken prior to construction of shopping precinct during 1981-2 and 1984-5.<1> An Anglo-Saxon hut C7 was uncovered in Site B. The base of the hut had been dug through a Roman tesselated pavement and the overlying Roman demolition layers. The sunken part of Hut 3 measured 3.9m x3.1m and served as the floor of the building and was of 2-post type. The sunken floor was peppered with stake holes, possibly associated with looms. A decorated C6-C7 bone comb lay on the surface of the floor/ approx 150 sherds of grass-tempered pottery from the hut fill and a copper alloy ringed pin of probable C7 date. Another hut (No. 4) may be of C6-C8 date or C12. A series of post pits represent another building, possibly of early medieval date. Also cess and rubbish pits. <1>
