Full Description

During investigations at Balkerne Lane 1973-6 (ECC332) and Lion Walk (ECC330), the Via Sagularis of the Roman Legionary Fortress has been located at a number of points around its circuit.

At the Balkerne Lane excavations the street was uncovered at only one place where it was found to be approximately 6.5m wide. However, it was felt that the true width of the street may have been less as some of the gravel spread may have derived from the proximity of the fortresses west gate. The street was resurfaced during the early years of the Colonia.<1>

At Lion Walk the via sagularis was excavated on Site B and observed in the north section of the contractor's excavation for the new basement. In every case, the packed gravel and sand which formed the metalling appeared to be of one period and was at most 0.25m thick. The via sagularis was 4.4m wide and seemed to be neatly cambered. The road was situated at a height of 30.31m OD.<2>
