Full Description

A Roman inhumation cemetery, less disciplined in layout than the nearby Butt Road cemetery. It is possible that all the inhumations could have had coffins. All the inhumations appeared to be extended and laid on their backs with their heads facing westwards or north-westwards. Four burials were accompanied by vessels. The burials were thought to be pre-dominantly 4th century and possibly late 3rd-century date. Three separate groups were identified, possibly indicating three phases of the cemetery. Two groups appear to respect the alignment of the road from the Balkerne Gate, 190m to the north. The third group are more strictly E-W on orientation and could be Christian? <1>

The cemetery overlies a Roman building of Flavian-Trajanic date (MCC463).
