Full Description

During the excavations at Middleborough in 1979 (ECC335), a post Roman unfurnished inhumation burial (F308) was discovered below the site of MCC426 (CAT Building 75).

The burial was one of four on the Middleborough site (see MCC445-MCC448) which lay without coffins in shallow, east-west aligned grave cuts. Although difficult to date, the burials were cut into the post-Roman topsoil and probably pre-date the early medieval pottery industry (second half of the 12th century) on the site as none of the pottery produced in MCC4330 and the other kilns was found in the graves.

The burial had been heavily disturbed and was represented by only ten post-cranial bones. The burial was probably of an adult female which lay with its head to the east.<1>
