Full Description
During the excavations at Middleborough in 1979 (ECC335), a post Roman unfurnished inhumation burial (F770) was discovered over the site of MCC404 (CAT Building 72).
The burial was one of four on the Middleborough site (see MCC445-MCC448) which lay without coffins in shallow, east-west aligned grave cuts. Although difficult to date, the burials were cut into the post-Roman topsoil (MCC445 was over the site of CAT Building 72, several metres to the south) and probably pre-date the early medieval pottery industry (second half of the 12th century) on the site as none of the pottery produced in MCC433 and the other kilns was found in the graves.
The burial was of a male aged between 33 and 45 years and lay with its head to the east.<1>
