Full Description
During excavations at Middleborough in 1979 (ECC335), a small, early medieval pottery kiln was discovered (F553). The kiln was one of nine probable (7 certain) kilns of this date from the site (MCC430-MCC437) which were producing a low-fired coarse ware with sand tempering. The seven certain kilns produced 86.5kg of pottery (c.7000 sherds).
The kiln had been partly cut by a robber trench and was too badly damaged for its internal structure to be identified.<1>
CAT Building 74 (MCC423) may be associated with the group of kilns.
