Full Description

During construction work (during the excavation of a large basement on the W side of the site) at the Middleborough (Cattle Market) site in 1979, a Roman Kiln (CAT No. 41=F1019) was discovered during a watching brief (ECC1289).

The kiln was dated to the Flavian - Trajanic period (AD 69-117; Colchester Periods 3-4). Apart from the stokehole and stoke pit, which were partially destroyed by a contractors digger, the kiln was well preserved.<1>
