Full Description

C16 timber framed house, incorporating remnants of an earlier building.

An assessment of the building in 2018 by Leigh Alston recorded, 'The house is said to be a 16th century jettied building incorporating the re-used sooted rafters of a medieval open hall, but contains no evidence either of jetties or 16th century work. It is more properly described as an early-19th century farmhouse with a central stair passage and a good stick-baluster staircase which retains the mid-17th century rear service range of the previous house on the site along with part of a rare late-medieval sooted kitchen. This kitchen lay in the hipped rear bay of a 15th century cross-wing that faced east towards the entrance track and almost certainly adjoined an open hall in the position of the modern dining room and kitchen on the north. The kitchen’s soot-encrusted rafters survive in situ, complete with a hip collar, and the front bays of the cross-wing may lie hidden within the plastered walls of the drawing room to the south of the entrance. The ground-floor walls were rebuilt in brick as part of the 19th century refurbishment and this has been misinterpreted as evidence for jetties.'<1>
