Description

BOXTED CHURCH ROAD 1. 5214 Pond House TL 93 SE 3/86 II GV 2. C16 house, with earlier remnants inside. Of 2 storeys, timber framed plastered with partly Flemish-bond brick ground storey, where former jetties underbuilt. Roofs ridged and hipped with 4 red brick chimney stacks, and the plan on an L with 2 short wings in the return. The south front was originally jettied full length but now underbuilt. A central chimney stack of square plan, existing windows sets of modern casements. East elevation has built out flat roofed addition on ground storey, full length, with reproduction fluted door case and wooden casement. A range of casements on first storey. Inside much evidence of good timber-framing; including former jetties along the north wall. The south-west roof has an uncommonly good heavy frame with serpentine collars to every 4 common- rafters. The soot encrusted rafters of an earlier open hall were re-used east of the chimney stack which internally is of narrow bricks and early date - possibly Henry VIII. Listing NGR: TL9988432855
