Full Description

Probably first half of C13 aisled hall house.<1>-<3>
The building was first recognised by Cecil Hewett.<1>
More recently, Stenning (2003) has written about the two phases of Songers. In its first phase the building had three bays, with the larger central bay or with the two southernmost bays as the hall. Unusally, part of the original aisles survives, incorporating reversed assembly (wall plate above aisle tie). Interestingly, much of the timber is not oak, with ash and elm used for for internal situations (oak was preferred for external walls). At the north end of the building, there is a medieval extension (utilitising curved instead of straight braces, which were used on the earlier bays), also aisled and of two bays (one open and one floored end bay). Stenning suggests it could have been a kitchen or additional hall bay.<2>
