Full Description

During the excavations at the Middleborough Site in 1979 (ECC335), the remains of a sub-rectangular Period 2 Roman timber-framed building were investigated (CAT Building 69). The building was of two phases and consisted of timber-framed, daubed, plastered and painted walls, with the outer wall being built on a stout foundation of mortar and septaria. During its first phase the building consisted of four identifiable rooms and a long passage along the south side.

During the second phase of the building, partitions were inserted to divide room 4 into three compartments and to create a small room at the east end of the passage. New floors were laid throughout and quarter-round mouldings of opus signinum occurred at the foot of the walls in Room 3 and 4a, which also plastered. Much of the plaster survived in situ and in places stood up to a height of 400mm.

The building was demolished sometime during the mid-second century AD and it would appear from the amount of wall plaster and daub which was preserved that only 15% of the total wall area in Room 4a survived in situ or in the demolition debris suggesting re-use elsewhere. The southern wall of the demolished building was incorporated into the first phase of MCC368 (CAT Building 70).

To the south of the building, there was the edge of a gravelled area which had probably been part of an alley or yard leading onto the main street to the east. Further south, a substantial foundation (MCC394) was encountered in a trial trench.<1>
