Full Description

The plaque over the door of this the King’s Head Inn, records the Royalist surrender following the siege of Colchester on 27th August 1648. In November 1790 the building was sold and the sale particulars referred to a ‘store room and brewhouse’ which contained much brewing equipment, raw materials and casks of beer. As some of this was bought by other brewers of the town, brewing on this site probably ceased at the time of the sale. The building remains, however, as a solicitors’ office. It is a two storey, timber-framed structure with rough cast walls between the timbers and under a clay tile roof. It has ample windows - vertical sashes with small panes - and the door has a square surround. <1>.
