Full Description
Late post-medieval quarry pit
The pit [5] was 7.90m long x +2m wide (to the edge of the trench) and at least 1.2m deep, with vertical sides. The lower fill was a firm dark bluish grey clay with moderate flint pebble inclusions and post-medieval brick and tile fragments. This was sealed by the upper fill [3], friable to firm mid brown sandy silt with inclusions of frequent flint pebbles and occasional flecks and fragments of ceramic building material. It was interpreted as a probable quarry pit. <1>
Small fire pit
This was a sub-circular-shaped pit [7], 0.9m x 0.9m in area x 0.18m deep. Its fill [6] was described as a soft friable light greyish brown sandy silt with very frequent charcoal fragments and flecks and moderate round flint pebbles. Martin Winter suggested (quoted in the report) such pits were very common in the vicinity and were dug by barracked soliders in the 19th century.
