Description
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken ahead of the Flakt Woods Project development at Cuckoo Farm, off Severalls Lane, Colchester. The evaluation aimed to assess the date, nature and extent of any archaeological features and deposits situated within the area of development. Aerial photographs had shown a number of ground anomalies including two possible ring ditches and linear features as well as some groups of non-linear features. The evaluation comprised 11 trenches, measuring between 20m – 50m long by 1.8m wide, situated over the crop marks.
Little of archaeological interest was revealed by this evaluation. Only two of the crop marks shown on the aerial photographs were identified as features below ground level but these both appeared to be geological anomalies or peri-glacial features. The only archaeological features, both in Trench 3, were a late post-medieval quarry pit and a small fire pit probably dating from the 19th century (although it was undated). <1>
