Full Description

A detached building to the east of Mill House and to the east of the bake-house (MCC3047) consists of a timber-framed and weatherboarded stable, cart shed and hay loft of the late-18th century with a mid-19th century red-brick extension to the north. Like the bake-house, this is unusually well preserved, retaining its mid-19th century wainscot, loose box doors and manger, but its most historically significant feature is an original boarded stall at the northern end of the 18th century section.<1>

Ground reduction within the stables, during conversion in 2018, revealed an early 19th-century rammed chalk floor (L5, c 0.08-0.16m thick) lying above a levelling layer dated to the late 18th century, around the time that the stable was constructed, as well as a brick plinth F2 similarly thought to be of late 18th-century origins (ECC3986).<2>
