Full Description

‘The bone is an incomplete femur (thigh bone) of an adult. The bone is in two pieces consisting of the shaft and the head of the femur. The distal end has broken off and is missing. The total length of the bone is 34.8mm and the diameter is 2.5cm at its narrowest point. The bone is in a good state of preservation and there are a few specks of charcoal on its surface.’

Several other Roman burials have been recorded previously from the area surrounding this find (MCC1454, MCC1447-MCC1459, MCC1766, MCC1889) and this bone appears to be of considerable age. There are no Anglo-Saxon burial grounds or Medieval parish churches known in the area, so it is assumed that the bone belongs to a Roman inhumation burial.

These fragments may have come from an in situ inhumation burial or a burial disturbed earlier, possibly caused by the construction of 10 and 11 St Johns Street. Inhumation burials in Colchester usually date to the later Roman period i.e. the 3rd to 4th century AD.<1>
