Description

On 03/12/2009 the Lost Property Department of Colchester Police Station reported a human bone to Colchester Museum that had been handed in to them from St John's Street. This was subsequently deposited with the museum four days later. The bone fragment had been found by a builder at no. 11 St Johns Street (TL 99493 24959) during works in the cellar to underpin the foundations to the property. This work was located on the western side of the property, beneath the boundary wall between nos. 11 and 10 St John’s Street. The bone appears to be of some considerable age and taking into account the other Roman inhumations that have been recorded in the vicinity, is assumed to have originated from another Roman in situ inhumation burial or another inhumation that has been previously disturbed. <1>
