Full Description

Immediately to the north of the two Roman walls of the Roman Circus (MCC2805), was a patch of highly compacted gravel surfacing with two distinct phases; an earlier phase of metalling and a second laid on top of the first. Two parallel shallow grooves 1.4m apart are thought to represent wheel ruts from carts running across the surface of the road, implying the road ran parallel with the walls of the Circus and is likely to have been contemporary. Finds associated with this surface included Roman tile and a brooch.<1>
