Full Description

Three large sections of ditch were excavated in two of the four trenches which are believed to constitute part of a rectangular enclosure, the northern return of which was located in the northernmost trench. Within the enclosure the remains of a structure with at least two phases of construction was recorded, in the form of post-holes sealed by robber trenches and demolition material. The remains of a clay floor and a metalled surface associated with the structure were also recorded.

Within the demolition material, a large amount of roof tile and box flue tile was recorded, which is usually associated with hypocausts. This as well as a number of tesserae cubes found may indicate the status of the structure. However, these findings were made from the demolition debris and were also very clean, which may suggest they are evidence of tile production on or near the site, rather than material from the structure itself, although no 'wasters' were found among the finds.

Pottery from the fill of the ditch indicates a 2nd- to mid-late 3rd-century date for the structure and enclosure. <1>
