Full Description

Excavations for a tower crane pit (4.3 x 3.4m in area) at 22 High Street revealed traces of a Roman building of several phases (CAT Building No 195). The building overlies CAT Building 194 (MCC2654). A new E to W wall line (F39) was constructed with a short stretch of return to the north, forming part of a building of mid 2nd century date. Layers were identified that could be replacement floors from an early phase of the building or dumps for later floors. Between the mid 2nd and mid 3rd century an opus signinum floor was laid over dump layers. A north-south wall may also be a re-building phase from this period.<1>
