Full Description

An excavation in the tower crane pit (4.3 x 3.4m in area) for rebuilding work at 22 High Street revealed the remains of a Roman building (CAT building 194). One E to W wall foundation (F47) was observed. The wall had been robbed (L76), it apparently ran to a junction with other walls at a spot truncated by a later wall. Below the wall was a dump layer (L77) containing Flavian-Hadrianic samian with a normal date range ending c.AD 140. A date of c.AD 100-140 is suggested for the building.<1>
