Full Description
RCHME survey of house and shop west of Schere Gate. The house 'has a projecting upper storey on the East side with one original shaped bracket' <1>
DOE survey of No 3 Scheregate. Grade II. C17 timber-framed and plastered building with the upper storey projecting on the east front with one original shaped bracket. Two storeys, attics and cellars, the roofs tiled. Ground floor shop. Possible invisible remains of Roman Town Wall incorporated in the foundations. <2>
In October 1999 following a complaint about the condition of the Roman wall at No 3 Scheregate Steps, a brief inspection was made. The property in question is the upper storey of No 3 with access from the Sheregate Steps at first floor level. The premises are occupied by a hair salon. A large strip of Roman core is exposed behind timber uprights inside the salon, with further sections covered over by later walling. The wall was in poor condition owing to a problem with running water from the adjacent property. A flash light inspection of the attic revealed surviving pargetted plaster and wattle and daub framing.<UAD record EVT1218 is the Source>
