Full Description
17th century house on site of Medieval Scheregate.
RCHME survey of Schere Gate. The house 'gateway and shop, has a projecting upper storey on the whole of the N front, with curved brackets. The house is built partly on the town wall and the gateway of old timber-framing, but without character, replaces a former postern'.<1>
DOE survey of The Scheregate. Grade II*. This is the remaining medieval gateway in the town wall. It now consists of a wide entry with a flight of steps through a C17 house built in the wall. The rest of this house is No's 6a and 6b, Sir Isaac's Walk (qv). The flight of steps is at the head of a broad passageway leading up from St John's Street; with houses (No's 1 to 4) on each side closely abutting the building above the entry. The building is timber-framed and plastered, with a deep brick plinth each side of the flight of steps, the upper storey projects on the north side and the tiled roof is hipped back. Timbers are exposed in the roof of the entry. No 1 Eld Lane forms the east side of the entry.<2>
An extensive series of sketch plans and elevations was made of the timbers exposed during restoration and alteration work to No's 6 & 6b Sir Isaacs Walk. The building consists of five blocks ranged alongside the walk. The eastern block has no ground floor because it was built over Sheregate Steps. The Roman wall lies along the rear of all the blocks. Only one block has an attic and one a cellar.<3>
