Full Description
The Queen Street Brewhouse (formerly the Brahms & Lizst Bar).
The Listing description records the building as 17th century. However, during renovation work in 1988 a shop window of 14th or 15th century date was recorded.
RCHME Survey of 7 & 9 Queen Street. The building 'has a cross-wing at the N end with a projecting upper storey'.<1>
DOE survey of No's 7 & 9 Queen Street. Grade II. C17 plastered, timber-framing, the roofs tiled, Two storeys and attics. Cross wing at the north end with the upper storey projecting on the west front. C18 and C19 sash windows.<2>
A survey was undertaken of No 7 Queen Street (The Brahms and Liszt Wine Bar) during renovation work in 1988. A medieval shop window was identified with parallels to The Swan, Maldon, dated to 1380-1390, suggesting that No. 7 is earlier in date, probably 15th or even 14th century.<3>
A relatively early (late C14?) two bay, cross-wing that was partially exposed during repair works in 1988. The pair of service doors, in the conventional location, are of 'durn' type, where half of the arched head and one jamb, were shaped out of a single timber. The front bay, was a shop with a 'window' with central post and two 'half arches', and a narrow 'coffin door' with conventional arched head.<4>
