Full Description
One of five (Hull states that Laver's notebook records 'many') inhumation burials found in 1892 on a red concrete Roman floor in the north-west corner of the Temple of Claudius Precinct, in Castle Park. Described by Laver as almost certainly Anglo-Saxon in date, although there were no datable finds.<1><2><3>
Hull states, 'Of the skeletons Laver records they were five (in the notebook 'many'), laid side by side, the feet alternately east and west. The heads were protected by pieces of Roman tile laid on either side, with another laid across the top. There were no objects deposited with them. They showed no trace of violence.'<2>
