Full Description

An evaluation was undertaken on the site of Sargeant's Engineering Works ahead of a redevelopment proposal which would involve lowering the southern part of the property by up to 1.5m to form a terrace for the construction of houses on a system of piles and ground beams, the latter restricted in depth due to a high local water table. Three small exploratory trenches were dug to assess the archaeological implications of the proposal. The first trench was 1m wide, 1m long and reached a depth of 1.1m. The lowest layer in the first trench may have represented Roman metalling, possibly belonging to the intervallum road along the north side of Insula 5.<1>
