Description
An evaluation was undertaken on the site of Sargeant's Engineering Works ahead of a redevelopment proposal which would involve lowering the southern part of the property by up to 1.5m to form a terrace for the construction of houses on a system of piles and ground beams, the latter restricted in depth due to a high local water table. Three test pits were dug to assess the archaeological implications of the proposal. The first trench was 1m wide, 1m long and reached a depth of 1.1m. At the limit of the excavation groundwater entered the trench. The second trench was 1.1m wide (E-W), 0.93m long (N-S) and reached a depth of 1.25m. The third trench was 1.05m wide, 2.2m long and 2.3m deep. Safety considerations prevented manual cleaning and close in situ examination of the lower levels exposed in this trench. All three trenches revealed a thick layer of dark soil which was identified as post-Roman accumulation. The lowest layer in the first trench may have represented Roman metalling and in the third trench the post-Roman dark soil sealed destruction debris from Roman buildings which may have been robbed of stone during the medieval period. Underlying this were spreads of dumped material and it was felt that further Roman levels may exist at a greater depth than was examined on this occasion.<1>
