Full Description

Roman Road from Colchester to Norwich. The exact line is not known but appears to relate to current Ipswich Road.

P.G. Laver noted the remains of an ancient road at a house called "Mountain Ash" in the Ipswich Road. A trench for a drain in the roadway, opposite the corner of the property, revealed a considerable ditch, the centre of which was 12ft from the kerb. The filling of dark earth was very distinct from the yellowish clayey gravel. The ditch was over 6ft wide at the top and over 5ft deep; the section was of V shape. At a point 34ft within the garden another ditch was exposed, of smaller size, being about 4ft across and about 3ft deep, with dark soil. For fuller description see Hull's notes.<1> and Laver's Diary (Sketch provided).<2>
