Full Description

A urn of native ware is held in the museum with a label, "discovered by Mr Joseph Gunn when excavating for building premises for Messrs Benham & Co High Street, Colchester". According to Benhams Almanac this would be 24 High Street. A note by Hull comments, "Despite the very circumstantial details given the find-spot cannot be accepted, for it lies ..within the walled town", but then he goes on to suggest that as the vessel is possibly Claudian and therefore the burial could be an isolated one made before the fortress was laid out.<1> This is Hull's Grave Group No 316.<2>
