Full Description

A Roman drain discovered during excavations on land acquired for the Eastern National Bus Depot (ECC812). The drain was situated at the tail of the town wall rampart (MCC1170). The drain was built of tile, mortar and septaria, and was 1ft. high.<1>

In 1990, trial excavation was carried out at Queen Street Bus Station. The 1990 excavation was limited to five small trenches, their locations largely dictated by a need to probe areas close to the periphery of the site. The first trench was located in the south-west corner of the bus station, 2.5m east of the Eastern National Bus compound and measured 8.8 x 1.2m. Roman levels were located at a depth of 1.1m (20.65m OD). Features including a drain were located. It is likely that the same drain was previously located in 1931 (ECC1952).
