Full Description

A pit dated to the 1st century AD and pre-dating the first surface of the main Balkerne gate road (MCC475) was discovered during excavations at the Crouched Friars in 1983/4 (ECC698). The exact nature of the pit could not be ascertained. To the south of the road, it was possible to identify 'chronological layers, sometimes with specific evidence of occupation'. Some of these layers were interpreted as floors. A pit dated to between the mid- 2nd to 3rd century AD was also recorded.<1>
