Full Description

A Roman wall was observed during the excavation of a sewer trench on the Queen Street Bus Station site in 1958/9 (ECC1523). The wall ran roughly east-west and was situated immediately south of an east-west street (MCC1467). It was 1ft. 7in. wide and constructed of septaria and mortar and flanked what appeared to be the street ditch (MCC1712). 'This wall may have supported a 'lean-to' roof for a veranda' belonging to House II (MCC1701). A 'floor' to the south of the wall had been made up twice, first with a mortared and secondly with a pebbled surface.<1>
It is possible that the 'floor' was in fact a covered footway between the street and a building, perhaps MCC1701.
