Full Description
16th century house, now demolished.
RCHME survey of 108 High Street. House 'is of three storeys, timber-framed and plastered; the roofs are tiled. It was built probably early in the 16th century, but was entirely remodelled c1700. The second storey projected on the E and S sides, but has been underbuilt on the S; at the angle is an original heavy curved bracket. Inside the building the S room on the first floor has an elaborate early 18th century plaster ceiling with moulded panels and in the middle an oval wreath of foliage with acanthus ornament and enclosing sprigs of oak and a sunflower. The space from which the main staircase has been removed has an enriched cornice and a panelled plaster ceiling with a wreath of foliage; on the East side is a narrow gallery formerly with a balustrade towards the staircase; the gallery has a panelled soffit. Condition - fairly good, much altered' .<1>
Excavation followed the demolition during the winter of 1959/60 of premises occupying a corner of the High Street and Maidenburgh Street. Excavation was restricted to the west, north and east of the site only as the central area was spanned by steel girders. The excavation was taken to an average depth of 4 feet, which according to L. Grant was insufficient to record a true section. The investigations revealed evidence of the former post medieval structures of the site.<2>
A photograph shows 108 High Street (Joslin's Ltd) in the process of demolition (c16th house remodelled in 17th century).<3>
