Full Description

A pre-Boudican (Period 1) timber wall, with two post-holes that might be associated (see MCC1564), at the southern end of Trench 1, suggesting the remains of a timber structure belonging to the military or early colonia phase of the Roman settlement. The remains consisted of a beam impression, 7cm wide, on a similar alignment to the later (Period 2) arcade of the temple precinct (MCC1544). The report states, 'it seems reasonable to assume that this was the north wall of a building the greater part of which will have been destroyed by the Norman ditch'. The building was apparently standing when the foundation platform for the temple arcade was constructed as the layers associated with the platform stop at the beam impression.<1>
