Full Description

A medieval house that stood on this site was almost completely rebuilt c.1700. The later house retained the medieval cellar and rear wall, however this to was demolished in the 20th century.

Survey by RCHME of 12 High Street. 'Of three storeys; partly of brick and partly of plastered timber-framing. The cellar is probably medieval but the house was rebuilt c.1700. The front is of brick with a band between the upper storeys and a modillioned eaves cornice. Inside the building the cellar has the front and part of one side wall of rubble; the floor above is supported on heavy chamfered beams. On the upper floors is some early 17th century panelling and the top of the staircase is of c.1700 with heavy twisted balusters, the wall at the rear of the house is of brick and probably of late 16th century date- condition good'.<1>

Seventy-eight small paving bricks and fragments of others were recovered from the site of the National Bank at 12-13 High Street in 1925 , COLEM 1925.5245.<2>

A carved oak window heading was found during the demolition of premises in the High Street for the erection of the annexe to the National and Provincial Bank in 1924. The heading was dated to the early 15th century. (It is not clear without further work whether the extension was No 12 or No 13 High Street, although No 12 seems the most likely choice given the No 13 was mostly rebuilt in the 18th century). COLEM 1924.4870.<3>
