Full Description
During excavations at Sheepen in 1970 (ECC488), the remains of an early Roman building were found. The building was built over the levelled dumps (see MCC1388) on which new surfaces of rough pebbles and pebbles with clay had been laid. Cut into these surfaces were the eroded traces of the timber building. A discontinuous beam slot marked the front wall, with a row of post holes cut into the edge of the road (MCC610) assumed to have formed a veranda. The buildings east wall was marked by a shallow slot but the back and west walls were not so well defined. A length of burnt clay wall survived to a height of 0.35m and the building was covered by destruction debris of burnt daub indicating that the building was almost certainly destroyed during the Boudican revolt of AD 60/1. <1>
