Full Description
During excavations at Crouch Street in 1973 (ECC349) a Roman ditch, or perhaps pit, was discovered cut by a later pit (MCC1239) which in turn was sealed by a hypocaust of a later building (see MCC1235). Only the bottom 1.0m of this earliest ditch survived and it was only revealed in one place so that, despite its appearance, it could have been a pit. The feature was filled with gravel and sand but no pottery was present so that its date is obscure. 'Its fill was very clean giving the impression that it may have been early, perhaps military, but this little more that a guess'.<1>
