Full Description
During excavations for a new subway at Crouch Street in 1973 (ECC349), the hypocaust of a Roman building was examined. 'The digging of various pits and service trenches had some time before resulted in extensive damage to the hypocaust with the result that less than half of it survived.' Most of the surviving remains were later destroyed during the final construction of the subway. The sub floor which had survived sloped slightly to the south and ended at the fragmentary remains of what had probably been a central tile-built drain. The sub floor was made of opus signinum and lied directly over the backfill of an earlier ditch (see MCC1239).The remains of eleven pilae were in situ. This is almost certainly the same hypocaust as the one uncovered under the adjacent pavement in 1925 (see MCC1073). Part of a floor was uncovered in 1922 and was probably part of another room in the same building (see MCC1071). The building's alignment was the same as that of a small street to the north (see MCC616) and thus may have been within a property which fronted onto it.<1>
