Full Description

Archaeological monitoring and recording during the groundworks associated with the erection of side and rear extensions at 1 St Clare Road, Colchester identified four features, including two early Roman pits (F1 and F4), as well as a post-medieval pit and a modern pit.<1>
Roman pit F1 (2.4m wide), sealed by modern pit F2, contained three sherds of early Roman pottery. Roman pit F4, a few metres to the south, contained a small quantity of early Roman finds, Late Iron Age sherds (L1C BC-M1C AD), a piece of salt-making briquetage (IA-E Rom) and a possible piece of triangular loomweight (IA-E Rom).
