Description

Archaeological monitoring and recording was carried out by Colchester Archaeological Trust during the groundworks associated with the erection of side and rear extensions at 1 St Clare Road, Colchester (CBC planning application 152377). Four features were identified in the footings of the rear extension, consisting of two early Roman pits, a post-medieval pit and a modern pit. A modern pit F2 sealed Roman pit F1 (2.4m wide) which contained three sherds of early Roman pottery (1st century AD). Post-medieval pit F3 (1.65m wide by 0.58m deep) contained a single piece of clay pipe. Roman pit F4 contained a small quantity of early Roman finds, Late Iron Age sherds (L1C BC-M1C AD), a piece of salt-making briquetage (IA-E Rom) and a possible piece of triangular loomweight (IA-E Rom). Natural was defined 500-780mm bgl.<1>
