Description

During May 1956 a field to the south of Altnacealgach House was investigated by H.M. Ministry of Works. Time only permitted a short excavation which consisted of a line of trenches, 3 ft wide and 18 ft. long, with 2 ft. baulks in between each trench, running north-south across the field. Further cuttings were then dug to follow up the few features found. The natural subsoil was found at approximately 2 ft. below the modern ground level. Features uncovered during the excavation included a palisade trench, wattle -and-daub structure, gullies and pits.<1>
